Business bank accounts for crypto and Web3 companies in the UAE

Most UAE banks still decline crypto-adjacent businesses — but the market split into banks that serve licensed VASPs, banks that serve "normal" companies holding crypto, and banks that refuse both. Here is how to tell which applies to you.

"Does a UAE bank onboard crypto businesses?" is the wrong question — the market is split three ways, and your answer depends on which of three categories you fall into: a licensed VASP, a normal company with incidental crypto exposure, or an unlicensed crypto-adjacent business. The wrong application wastes weeks; the right categorisation gets you to yes or no in days.

The three categories banks see

  • Licensed VASP — exchange, custody, brokerage or transfer services under a VARA (Dubai) or FSRA (ADGM) licence. The clearest path: several banks maintain VASP-dedicated onboarding.
  • Normal business, incidental crypto — a trading, services or holding company that happens to hold or receive crypto. Decided case-by-case; disclosure and source-of-funds quality decide.
  • Unlicensed crypto activity — operating exchange/brokerage functions without a VASP licence. Near-universal decline; this is a regulatory problem, not a banking problem.

Who actually serves the space

Zand Bank was built with digital-asset banking as a stated vertical and maintains a corporate desk for the sector. Al Maryah Community Bank (Mbank) has publicly positioned on digital-asset services through partnerships. Conventional banks onboard licensed VASPs case-by-case — approval speed correlates with licence scope and the quality of your compliance pack, not with the bank's marketing.

What the bank will actually ask for

  • The licence — VARA/FSRA scope, any conditions, supervisory history.
  • Source of funds and source of crypto — exchange statements, on-chain analytics reports if available.
  • AML/CFT framework — your transaction-monitoring provider, Travel Rule implementation.
  • Expected flows — which fiat corridors, which counterparties, monthly volumes.

By segment

  • Licensed exchanges/custodians: apply to banks with a stated digital-asset desk first; parallel applications save months.
  • Web3 services companies (dev shops, consultancies): frame the activity as services revenue, not crypto operations — the licence question may not apply at all.
  • Companies paying salaries in crypto: treat it as a payroll/compliance question; several banks accept it if payroll provider converts to AED first.
  • Holding companies: the cleanest crypto-adjacent case if funds are already fiat — expect enhanced due diligence anyway.

The honest answer

Start with the accounts that publish free-zone and sector acceptance field by field, then confirm the bank's digital-asset policy in writing before submitting — a declined application creates a record that follows you.

Frequently asked questions

Can a crypto company open a business account in the UAE?

Yes, if the company is a licensed VASP (VARA in Dubai, FSRA in ADGM) — several UAE banks onboard licensed virtual-asset providers specifically. An unlicensed crypto-adjacent business faces far fewer options and should expect enhanced due diligence.

What is a VASP licence and why does it matter for banking?

VASP = Virtual Asset Service Provider — the licence issued by Dubai's VARA or ADGM's FSRA to companies running crypto exchanges, custody, brokerage or similar. Banks screen for it first: a VASP licence is the single document that moves a crypto company from auto-decline to manual underwriting at most UAE banks.

Can a normal UAE company hold crypto on its balance sheet?

Some banks allow it if the crypto position is incidental to the business, disclosed upfront, and funds trail through a licensed exchange — but many still decline any crypto exposure at all. The deciding factor is usually whether crypto-related flows touch the account, not the asset itself.
