Payment gateway monthly fee vs per-transaction pricing in the UAE
Zero-monthly gateways charge more per transaction; subscription plans buy the rate down. The break-even is simple arithmetic most merchants never run — here is how to compute it on your own volume.

Every UAE gateway presents the same choice in different clothing: pay a monthly fee for a lower rate, or pay nothing fixed and a higher rate per transaction. Merchants pick on the headline percentage and get the arithmetic wrong almost every time.
The break-even arithmetic
Take the monthly fee and divide by the per-transaction saving — that is the volume where the plan starts paying. Under the break-even, a zero-monthly plan is strictly cheaper; over it, you are donating the difference. Run the number on your realistic volume, not the volume you hope for.
What zero-monthly actually costs
Pay-as-you-go gateways price the risk of your low volume into the rate and the fixed per-transaction component. At a low average order value, the fixed fee dominates: a flat AED 1 on an AED 20 sale adds five full points to the effective rate. This is the column of the comparison table most merchants skip.
Beyond the rate
- Settlement speed: some zero-monthly plans settle slower — a day or two of float on your money is an invisible cost.
- Refunds and chargebacks: check whether the original commission is returned on refunds; at thin margins this decides the real rate.
- International cards: cross-border surcharges apply on both plan types and can exceed the domestic difference.
- Lock-in: monthly plans sometimes carry minimum terms; a seasonal business can lose more in quiet months than it saves in peak ones.
The honest answer
Under roughly AED 20–50k monthly card volume, zero-monthly pay-as-you-go is almost always cheaper; above that, run the break-even before signing. The gateways comparison page lists both plan types with their published rates.
