Prepaid vs credit corporate cards in the UAE — what actually differs
Most UAE "corporate cards" are prepaid spend-platform cards, not real credit. The difference decides approval odds, limits, fraud exposure and whether the card helps your company build a credit record.

When a UAE founder searches for a "corporate credit card", they are usually shown prepaid spend-platform cards and assume the products are equivalent. They are not — the funding model behind the card changes what it can do, who approves it and what happens when something goes wrong.
Prepaid / charge-platform cards
Spend platforms issue cards funded from a balance you load (or a linked account). Approval is a KYC check, not a credit decision — that is why they onboard new free-zone companies in days. You get the workflow layer: virtual cards, per-card limits, receipt capture and accounting sync. The trade-offs: limits equal available cash, there is no unsecured float, and a fraudulent charge hits your own money until the dispute resolves.
Real credit cards
A true corporate credit card extends a revolving line — the bank lends against your creditworthiness. That brings harder underwriting (operating history, sometimes audited financials), slower approval, and interest on carried balances. In exchange you get genuine float, stronger chargeback posture on disputed purchases, and a credit record that compounds into better banking terms.
What actually decides the choice
- Approval odds: a 3-month-old free-zone company gets a prepaid platform; a credit line usually wants 1–2 years of history.
- Cash position: prepaid caps spending at loaded balance — fine for SaaS and ads, awkward for seasonal inventory.
- Risk exposure: prepaid fraud drains your cash pending dispute; credit card fraud is the bank's problem first.
- Workflow: both now offer virtual cards and controls — the spend platform layer is comparable; the funding underneath is not.
The honest answer
For most UAE SMEs the prepaid spend platform is the right first card — it is the only one they can realistically get, and the workflow is the point. Treat a real credit card as the second step, once banking history exists and unsecured float is worth the interest cost. Compare both on the corporate cards page.
